FRU launches coaching manual
The Fiji Rugby Union launched its coaching manual on Tuesday aimed at bringing some uniformity to the difficult task of rugby development in Fiji.
With Fiji’s population spread across more than 100 islands, the intention of the coaching manual is to give all aspiring rugby coaches a basic and standard understanding of the way rugby should be coached in Fiji.
FRU’s rugby development manager, Semi Matalau, introduced the 95-page manual to the media in Suva and explained the need for such a resource.
“We will be distributing these manuals around the region in order to educate all coaches,” Matalau said. “Aspiring coaches will have a chance to further their knowledge. Once they understand these basics thoroughly, they’d be in a position to attend an IRB Level 1 coaching course.”
Highlanders coach Etuate Waqa, who is also a full-time Rugby Development Officer with the FRU, expressed deep satisfaction with the publication.
“Never before has Fiji Rugby had a proper coaching manual like this, so this is a new beginning for our coaches. It sets a standard for our young coaches and in turn lifts the standard of the game.”
FMF Flying Fijians coach Ilivasi Tabua endorsed Waqa’s comments.
“This coaching manual sets a universal standard for our local coaches,” Tabua said. “It will ensure that the standard of coaching is uplifted from the grassroots level through to the national team.”
“By setting one standard, players learn from the same system, which in turn makes it easier for all coaches.”
